Sargent Master Key Systems in Los Angeles, CA | Strongbox Lock & Safe Co.

Sargent Master Key Systems: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Sargent-compatible master key systems across Los Angeles, with most residential jobs running $280-$520 installed and commercial master key expansions typically $340-$780 depending on cylinder count and keyway complexity. Same-day service is available when you call before noon, and we carry Sargent 6300, 6500, and LA keyway cylinders on our trucks. Most Los Angeles property owners discover their master key system is failing when a sub-master suddenly opens doors it should not, or when a grand master key starts sticking in multiple locks after years of smooth operation.

Which Sargent Models This Applies To

Sargent master key systems span several product families, and matching the right cylinder to your existing keyway is where most mistakes happen. We regularly work with the 6300 line (standard mortise cylinders), the 6500 series (rim cylinders for surface-mounted applications), and the LA keyway cylinders common in Los Angeles commercial buildings from the 1980s and 1990s. The 10-line and 11-line bored locks also accept Sargent master key cores, though the pinning specifications differ.

To identify your cylinder, check the face for a stamped keyway designation: LA, LB, LC, or LD for older systems, or the newer XC, XD, or XE keyways. Measure the cylinder length from the face to the cam tail: standard mortise cylinders run 1-1/8″ to 1-3/8″, and a mismatch here will leave your lock inoperable even with the correct pinning. We source OEM Sargent cylinders through authorized distribution, though for discontinued keyways we often machine quality aftermarket equivalents to spec. The aftermarket route saves roughly 20-30% when available, but we will not install one unless we have verified the alloy and tolerance match. Strongbox Lock & Safe Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Sargent.

Signs Your Sargent Master Key System Is Failing

  • Key works in wrong doors. This is the clearest sign of master wafer failure: the small pins that create the master key combination have worn down or shifted, causing shear lines to align incorrectly. In Los Angeles, we see this accelerated by desert dust infiltration in buildings near the 10 or 605 corridors where seals degrade faster.
  • Grand master key sticks or requires jiggling. Multiple shear lines in a master pinned cylinder create more friction points; when lubricant gums up or wafers corrode, the key that must satisfy every level of the hierarchy binds first. This worsens gradually until the key will not withdraw.
  • Tenant keys work intermittently. Change keys operate on a single shear line; if that line drifts due to spring fatigue or pin wear, the key works on cool mornings and fails by afternoon as metal expands. We replace a lot of Sargent springs in Mid-City buildings where temperature swings are sharpest.
  • Cylinder feels loose in the lock body. The tailpiece retainer or cylinder collar has cracked, often from over-torquing during rekeying by a previous technician. A loose cylinder misaligns the cam with the lock mechanism and will eventually spin freely.
  • Key breaks off in cylinder. Master key systems with worn pinning create uneven resistance; users apply more force, and the key shears at a stress point. Extracting a broken key from a master pinned cylinder without damaging the wafers takes patience and the right tools.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Range
Single Sargent master cylinder replacement (residential) $280-$380
Commercial master key cylinder with pinning to existing system $340-$520
Full system rekey with new master key hierarchy $480-$780
Emergency same-day service (nights/weekends) Add $75-$120

These prices include the cylinder, master pinning to your existing bitting schedule, two working keys, and our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. What drives the range: keyway rarity (discontinued LA keyways cost more to source), cylinder quantity in a commercial expansion, and whether we need to rebuild the master key chart from scratch because the previous locksmith left no records. We quote flat on the phone once we know your keyway and how many cylinders are involved. The price we quote is the price you pay.

DIY or Call Us?

There is nothing dangerous about a Sargent cylinder itself; it is not under spring tension like a garage door component and carries no electrical hazard. That said, master key pinning is unforgiving work. A single wafer placed one-thousandth of an inch off destroys the keying hierarchy, and without a key machine and proper pinning kit, you cannot test your work. We have been called to Los Angeles buildings where a well-meaning owner rekeyed six cylinders only to discover the grand master opened every door and the tenant keys opened none.

What you can safely check: confirm the keyway stamp on your cylinder face, count how many cylinders are in your system, and photograph any numbers on existing keys. What goes wrong with DIY: buying the wrong cylinder length, using standard pins instead of master wafers, or losing the bitting code and having to decode every lock by hand. If your building has more than three cylinders on a master system, the time you spend troubleshooting will exceed what we charge to do it right the first time. Call (877) 664-8139 and we will walk through what you have before we schedule.
