Kwikset Master Key Systems in Los Angeles, CA | Strongbox Lock & Safe Co.

Kwikset Master Key Systems: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

A complete Kwikset master key system installed in Los Angeles typically runs $280-$520 depending on how many cylinders and key levels you need, and we can usually have a technician there same day if you call before 2 PM. We stock Kwikset SmartKey and traditional pin-tumbler master key hardware on every truck, so most jobs finish in a single visit. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover their master key system is failing when the property manager’s master suddenly stops opening a tenant’s door, or when a rekey that should take ten minutes turns into an hour of fighting sticky pins.

Which Kwikset Models This Applies To

Kwikset master key systems fall into two distinct families, and mixing them up is the most common compatibility mistake we see in the field.

Traditional pin-tumbler systems cover the Kwikset 660, 780, 980, and Signature Series deadbolts and knobs. These use standard .115-inch diameter bottom pins and .030-inch master wafers. The keyway is the familiar KW1 or KW10 profile. If your lock has a small “S” or “CS” stamped on the face, it is likely a SmartKey cylinder, which uses a completely different sidebar mechanism and cannot be master-keyed using traditional pin stacks. SmartKey cylinders require Kwikset’s proprietary SmartKey master key kit, which uses a different wafer geometry.

To identify what you have: remove a key and look at the bow. Traditional Kwikset keys show “KW1” or “A1” stamped near the head. SmartKey bows are stamped “SmartKey” and have a small slot beside the keyhole on the cylinder face. Measure your cylinder diameter if you are unsure: traditional cylinders measure 1.050 inches across the face; SmartKey cylinders run slightly larger at 1.090 inches.

We carry both OEM Kwikset master key kits and quality aftermarket equivalents from LAB and HPC. For rental properties in Los Angeles where turnover is high, we often recommend the LAB LPK005 kit with nickel-silver wafers. They wear better against the grit that blows in from the desert during Santa Ana wind season. OEM Kwikset wafers are brass and corrode faster in coastal neighborhoods like Venice or San Pedro where salt air is a factor.

Signs Your Kwikset Master Key System Is Failing

  • The master key works but the change key does not. This usually means a master wafer has worn to an intermediate height, catching the master pin stack but blocking the change key’s combination. In Los Angeles, this happens faster on south-facing doors where UV heat cycles the metal through expansion and contraction daily.
  • Keys stick or require jiggling at certain times of day. Temperature-sensitive binding indicates worn pin chambers or accumulated grime. Morning fog in neighborhoods near the coast, followed by afternoon heat, accelerates this. The lubricant dries to a paste instead of a film.
  • A new key works smoothly but an older key does not. This is classic key wear, but in a master key system it can also signal that master wafers have shifted or compressed. We see this often in 1980s apartment buildings in Koreatown and Mid-City where original Kwikset cylinders have never been serviced.
  • The lock accepts any key or no key at all. A master wafer has broken or fallen into the plug. This is a security failure, not just a convenience issue. The cylinder needs immediate replacement or rebuilding.
  • Rekeying does not “take” - pins fall out or bind. The cylinder plug or bible has ovalized from years of use. Kwikset’s .003-inch factory tolerance does not forgive much wear. At this point, replacement is more reliable than another rebuild.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard Los Angeles single-family or duplex, here is how the pricing breaks down:

Service Price Range
Master key cylinder rebuild (traditional) $145-$195
SmartKey master key conversion $185-$245
Additional cylinders keyed alike to master $65-$95 each
Grand master system (3+ key levels) $340-$520
Emergency same-day service call $89-$125

The range depends on cylinder count, whether we are working with existing hardware or replacing worn cylinders, and whether you need a simple master/submaster setup or a more complex grand master hierarchy for multiple buildings. We quote flat on the phone once we know the cylinder count and model. Every master key job carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise, backed in writing. If a wafer settles or a key does not operate smoothly, we come back. No paperwork, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There is nothing dangerous about disassembling a Kwikset cylinder - no springs under tension, no electrical components. The risk is practical, not physical. Master key pinning requires three simultaneous calculations: the bottom pin height, the master wafer height, and the relationship between all chambers so that no ghost key opens the lock. One pin off by a single depth increment, and you have created a key that opens doors it should not.

What you can safely check: confirm your cylinder type (SmartKey vs. traditional), count your cylinders, and photograph any existing key stamps. What goes wrong with DIY: ordering the wrong wafer kit, mixing brass and nickel-silver wafers in the same cylinder, or building a master key system with accidental cross-keying that leaves a security hole. We have been called to fix DIY master key jobs in Los Angeles maybe forty times in the past decade. It always costs more than doing it right the first time.
