How Strongbox Lock & Safe Co. Was Born
Back in 1984, Gil Navarro was working out of a small shop in Los Angeles, doing lockouts and rekeys for whoever walked through the door. One afternoon, a woman came in shaking. She’d been locked out of her house in Woodland Hills, called a company that advertised a $19 service call, and ended up with a bill for $340. The technician had drilled her deadbolt, told her it was “high security,” and sold her a replacement she didn’t need. She was a schoolteacher. That was her grocery money for the month.
Gil fixed her lock for the cost of the parts and a cup of coffee. Then he sat down and wrote out what he’d been thinking for years. The locksmith trade had become a trap for honest people. Bait-and-switch pricing, unmarked vans, technicians who wouldn’t show ID. He promised himself that any company he put his name on would do the opposite. Flat price quoted on the phone. Licensed techs who badge in at the door. No drilling unless it’s truly the last option. That afternoon, Strongbox Lock & Safe Co. was born, named for the iron box where his grandfather kept the deed, the thing in the house that meant “what matters stays safe.”
What started in that Los Angeles shop grew into a network of locations across California and beyond. We’ve kept the same standard at every desk and in every van: the person who opens your locks should be the most verifiable person you’ve ever hired.
Gil Navarro’s Personal Connection to the Locksmith Trade
Gil didn’t stumble into locksmithing. He was drawn to it the way some people are drawn to watch repair or woodworking, the satisfaction of a mechanism that either works or it doesn’t, no room for pretense. The tradesman who trained him was a man in his sixties who smoked unfiltered cigarettes and could feel a pin stack with his eyes closed. Gil spent his first year sweeping brass shavings off a concrete floor, watching, handing over tools he didn’t yet know the names of. The shop smelled like machine oil and the metallic tang of key blanks. He learned to listen to a lock the way a mechanic listens to an engine.
There was a moment, maybe two years in, when a customer brought in an antique safe from a estate sale in Riverside. Three other locksmiths had already failed to open it. Gil worked on it for three days, mostly by feel, mostly in the evenings when the phone stopped ringing. When the bolt finally retracted, he didn’t cheer. He sat back and looked at the thing for a long minute, understanding something about patience he’d never put words to before. That’s when he knew this wasn’t a job he’d leave.
Forty-two years later, what gets him out of bed is the same thing: a lock that won’t open, a homeowner who needs to get back inside, a problem that has a right answer if you’re willing to work until you find it. If he weren’t doing this, he’d probably be fixing old clocks or restoring furniture, something with his hands that requires the same quiet attention. But this is what he chose, and he’s never regretted it.
The work means something personal because a lock is never just metal. It’s the moment before a child sleeps in a new house, the first night alone after a divorce, the business owner who stayed late and can’t find the keys. Gil has been present for thousands of those moments. He doesn’t take that lightly.
Meet Gil Navarro - The Person Behind Every Job
Gil Navarro, Owner & Founder
Gil has spent 42 years with his hands inside locks, safes, and security hardware. He trained as a journeyman locksmith in Los Angeles, working through every phase of the trade from shop apprentice to master technician. He’s certified in safe and vault work, holds the state-required locksmith credentials, and has personally trained the senior technicians who now lead our locations across the network.
What separates Gil from a franchise technician sent from a dispatch center is simple: he built this company, and his name is on every job we do. He still reviews the tricky cases, still takes calls from technicians stumped by an unusual mechanism, still believes that the 400th job deserves the care of the first. Outside the shop, he’s an early riser who walks his dog before dawn and reads history books he never finishes because he falls asleep holding them.
His commitment to you is direct: if we work on your lock, we stand behind it. No paperwork, no arguing.
Our Promise to Homeowners
We operate by a code we call K.E.Y.S., and it’s not decoration. It’s how we decide what to do when no one’s watching.
Krafted right means trained journeymen, proper materials, no shortcuts. We use Schlage, Medeco, Kwikset, and Abloy hardware because we’ve seen what happens when someone installs a bargain cylinder to save eight dollars. We don’t do that.
Every time means the technician who comes at 2 a.m. treats your lock with the same patience as the technician who comes at 10 a.m. We’ve fired people who couldn’t live up to that.
Your home first means we work in your house the way we’d work in our mother’s. We wear shoe covers, we explain before we drill, and we never leave a job site messier than we found it.
Standing behind it is our Keystone Standard, applied to locks: 90 days, in writing, no arguing. If it’s not right, we come back. We’ve honored that promise when it cost us money, because a promise you only keep when it’s cheap isn’t a promise.
Our Credentials
State-licensed - Every professional working under our name is required to hold the license their state requires. For you, that means a verifiable credential you can check, not a vague claim.
Insured & bonded - Protection for your property while we work. If something goes wrong, there’s coverage in place. You shouldn’t have to worry about that, and with us, you don’t.
42+ years in business - We’ve outlasted trends, economic downturns, and dozens of competitors who opened with splashy ads and closed within two years. That longevity means we’ve seen your problem before, and we know how to fix it right.
Strong local reputation - We earn our calls through word of mouth and repeat customers, not through bait-and-switch pricing or high-pressure sales. Our reputation is the only advertising we trust.
These credentials matter because you’re inviting someone into your home to work on the very thing that keeps it secure. A homeowner who’s been burned once remembers it forever. We give you something you can verify: a license you can look up, insurance you can confirm, a company that’s still here when you need us again.
Rooted in the Communities We Serve
Our home base is Los Angeles, where Gil started and where we still maintain our flagship operations. From there, our network grew into San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Sacramento, Fresno, Long Beach, Riverside, Woodland Hills, Santa Clara, Santa Clarita, and Santa Ana. Each location is staffed by a local team that knows the building codes, the common hardware, and the neighborhoods they work in. We hire local, train apprentices into journeymen, and answer the phone with a live coordinator who connects you with the team nearest you. A company that plans to be in town in thirty years acts like it.
